Keep in mind that TM won’t delete the most recent backup to make room for the next, so it’s a good rule of thumb to assign at least double the size that a full backup would take, and at the very minimum enough space for a full backup plus whatever new data you add in between incremental backups. Another potential solution to shrinking the sparsebundle is to create a new one and use disk utility(this only works with High Sierra and earlier) to restore the old bundle to the new bundle, but you need enough storage available to do that.Īssuming the above works, going forward TM should automatically delete old backups to make room for new ones. Network Time Machine backups are unreliable in general though so the risk isn’t much higher than just using TM normally on the network.
The following advice has a chance to hose your backup, require you to start over and may not even work because Apple doesn’t have good documentation on how TM does it’s thing and how that’s changed between different versions of masOS. I’ll give you my advice with the caveat that Apple’s official stance would be don’t mess with it.
